ten things you wanted to know about working out but were afraid to ask
by Joseph Janowicz
A lot of people have contacted me regarding how to achieve their goals in their workouts. I have compiled the “Top Ten” questions (in no particular order) and have answers that could benefit anyone who follows these suggestions.
Q- How often should I exercise?
Whether at a gym or in your home, four days a week for 45 minutes. This can include a mixture of cardio, aerobics, and free weights. Any time beyond this may work against you as your body can only do so much exercise before fatigue and possible injury could happen.
Q- Are sport drinks good for the body and do they really help my workout?
Some sport drinks can help you stay hydrated during your workout. But some have too much caffeine in them. Read the labels for calories and what they contain. Some taste good, some taste terrible. My favorite is just plain water. Plain fountain or tap water will be fine.
Q- How do I get bigger muscles?
Depending on your age and physical abilities, it’s basically through harder work in the gym. When you lift heavier weights, combined with good nutrition, you can increase muscle size over a period of time.
Q- What’s the best diet to follow?
You are what you eat. Learn to eat small meals every few hours, not one gigantic one. Eat a balanced combination of good protein, carbohydrates, fruits, and vegetables and you can maintain a leaner look.
Q- Do I really need a trainer?
Every professional athlete has a trainer. A good trainer can motivate you to achieve your goals and help shape your body to what you want it to be. Shop around for a trainer by calling the various gyms and asking for resumes. Another indication of a good trainer is whether they look in shape and seem to have good answers to questions.
Q -What’s the best time to work out?
It depends on your schedule and what works for you. Bottom line, find that time and use it to your advantage.
Q- What dietary supplements should I use?
A good multivitamin, good nutrition, and good rest are the keys to success.
Q- Should I exercise when I have aches and pains?
Yes, but in moderation. As we age, we all have daily aches and pains. I’m careful in my choice of exercise if my back aches or my leg hurts. You can work around small injuries, but sometimes rest is the best prescription.
The intent of this article is to help you. All you have to do is start doing the right things and you’ll have the right results. Stay healthy, stay fit.
