stressed out? try stretching

Stress can manifest itself in many parts of the anatomy, but for most people, stress is felt in the upper areas of the body such as the neck, shoulders, and chest. It is also not uncommon for tension to accumulate in your face and jaw muscles. But you can relieve much of this stress quickly and easily by simple stretching exercises.

As you try these exercises, remember not to strain too hard. You can easily hurt yourself if you try too hard in the early stages of your stretching program. Warm up carefully and slowly and keep your movements and motions smooth. Pain is not a good sign. Finally, it’s always a good idea to check with your doctor before beginning any type of exercise program, including simple stretches.

With these caveats in mind, here are three simple stretches that can help relieve the everyday stresses of life.

Forward Head Rolls

In a sitting position, tip your head slowly and gently from side to side. Then tip it forward and back. Do not stretch too far! Repeat this 3 times and feel your muscles stretch and relax.

Shoulder Rolls

Raise your shoulders straight up. Then roll them back and down gently. Try to keep your face and jaw muscles relaxed while you do these. Repeat this 3 times as well.

Upper Body Stretch

While seated, clasp your hands gently and place them behind your neck. Now stretch your whole upper body to the left. Hold that position for a count of 10, then slowly return to straight up. Now try the same stretch to the right and hold for a count of 10. Return to straight up. Repeat this 3 times.

Take a minute to gently and slowly move your head from front to back, side to side, and in a full circle. For your jaw, stretch your mouth open and slowly move your lower jaw from side to side and front to back.

(NOTE: If you notice any pain or if you have had any injuries to your back, neck or jaw, check with your doctor first.)
