achieve the rewards of a well-balanced life A well-balanced person realizes that health is the most important gift we can give ourselves. However, many people have difficulty finding time to concentrate on personal health, when family, work and finances demand so much. Understanding what true balance means and applying it to our lives can be simple with the help of the everyday, useful tools that exist all around us. This time of the year allows us to experience the outdoors and the natural resources it offers to support a goal of achieving balance. Preferred Care, area health care agencies and the Finger Lakes Visitors Connection recently joined together to promote Nature’s Health Club, an initiative designed to help people identify and make use of all the ways nature can help achieve health and wellness. There are more than 5,000 miles of walking, riding, sailing and biking opportunities in the Finger Lakes Region. A walk outdoors along Canandaigua City Pier or a hike along the Maryfrances Bluebird Haven in Victor gives those seeking relaxation and peace the chance to take in fresh air and meditate. Physical activity also contributes to a well-balanced lifestyle. Endorphins released during exercise aid in increased levels of productivity and overall happiness. “Adding a fitness routine to your schedule also goes a long way toward achieving health and wellness,” explains Laura Gladwin, MS, AFP, Director of Preferred Care’s “You’re In Charge!” “Exercising is not only about keeping off unwanted weight, it also helps manage stress and provides us with more energy throughout the day.” A rigorous cycling trip along the sloping hills of Seneca Falls along Cayuga Lake or sailing on Seneca Lake are ways to make use of the natural fitness center that exists in your own backyard. Nature not only offers outlets for exercise and meditation, it provides the means to fuel our bodies with the nutrition it needs. Eating a balanced diet of fruit, vegetables and grains balances our digestive systems and supplies the body with exactly what it needs to perform. The fertile soil and gentle climate of the Finger Lakes Region provide farmers with near perfect growing conditions. Summer farmer’s markets and roadside stands throughout the Finger Lakes offer fresh locally grown produce to add to healthy meal plans. Upstate New York, specifically the Finger Lakes Region, offers a wide array of opportunities for us to practice living well and healthily. The waterways, nature trails, farmers markets and wonderful parks provide a natural path to healthy living.
