don’t fear the chiropractor
by Steven Sadlon, D.C.
(Editor’s Note: For many years I have heard people express tremendous fear of visiting a chiropractor because they feared the dreaded neck adjustment. I asked Dr. Steve Sadlon, a chiropractor in Penfield, to comment on this.)
Your lower back is killing you and someone has suggested that you see a chiropractor, but you’ve heard so many horror stories about chiropractors that you’re afraid to go see one. Visions of "The Exorcist" with Linda Blair’s head swiveling in a circle dance before your eyes and you think, “Whoa, no way. I’ll just put up with the pain.” You wonder if the Internet has any statistics about how many people have had their neck broken by Igor, the friendly neighborhood Chiropractor. Didn’t a friend of a friend tell you that his cousin, twice removed, was paralyzed from the waist down after just one visit to the (shudder)…Chiropractor?
I hear this or a similar story all the time. I’m one of your local chiropractors, and my name is not Igor, it’s Steve. I survived seven years of graduate education before I was able to hang a shingle with the name Dr. Steven Sadlon on my door. I’m required to take 60 hours of additional training every year. I have been practicing since 1986, and guess what? I’ve never lost a patient yet. No one has ever been injured in my care. Patients walk out of my office feeling relief from pain that they once thought was chronic and permanent.
Chiropractic provides options you may not have considered in maintaining and improving your health. Did you know a chiropractic adjustment balances your nervous system so that your immune system functions at an optimal level, without the use of medications? The next time you feel a cold coming on, see your chiropractor -- your body will thank you. And you know that low backache you get everyday? You may just have a small subluxation (misaligned vertabrae irritating the nervous system). Your chiropractor can have you pain-free on the first visit with just one gentle manipulation.
Chiropractic affects more than physical well-being. Many patients have reported a feeling of deepening peace and relaxation after an adjustment. Some have described a warm feeling flowing to various parts of their bodies that’s very soothing. Some feel very relaxed or energetic, or both!
A chiropractor helps you take care of yourself without the use of medications. Give him a chance. I think you’ll find that you are in good hands.
