Electrolysis for hair removal
by Gia Ricelli

We all want to feel good about our appearance, but sometimes it's difficult to be positive when we know there are areas we would like to change..  If excess hair is one problem you'd like to eliminate, electrolysis (permanent hair removal) can help do just that.  This procedure will eliminate unwanted hair and in the process, give you a new self-confidence.  Electrolysis can definitely change your life in a positive way.

How Electrolysis Works
An electrolysis treatment involves inserting a sterile probe, the same size as the hair, into the hair follicle opening down to the dermal papilla.  The dermal papilla is the electrologist's target.  It is the part of the follicle that contains blood and nerves and feeds the growing hair.  If the papilla and the regenerative cells surrounding it are destroyed, the hair will die.  When the probe is in place, a low-level electrical current is applied that will destroy the papilla and surrounding cells and loosen the hair in the follicle.  The hair is then removed.

Many hairs will be eliminated with only one treatment, but some will need two or more to be permanent.  Electrolysis involves a series of treatments over time.  The length of time depends on the amount of hair, its coarseness, the cause of the excess hair, and many other factors.  But once the dermal papilla has been eliminated, the hair is dead and will not regrow.

Electrolysis Techniques

Electrolysis the only form of permanent hair removal recognized by the American Medical Association, and the only FDA-approved form of permanent hair removal.  There are three modalities that can be used to eliminate unwanted hair, and all three are effective.  Galvanic Electrolysis, which is the oldest, is a chemical method that utilizes direct current to convert normal body salt and water in the follicle to a compound capable of destroying the dermal papilla.  The chemical is produced only in the follicle and does not affect any other area.  One or more probes working simultaneously can be used during this process.

Thermolysis is a method utilizing high frequency current to produce heat in the target area.  This heat cauterizes and destroys the dermal papilla.  One sterile probe is used during this process.  The two variations of Thermolysis are "flash" or "automatic" Thermolysis, which uses a split-second pulse of current, and "manual" Thermolysis, which requires several seconds at a lower intensity to become permanent.  The Blend method combines both currents together in the same probe.  Your electrologist will select the best method for you based on your hair type, skin characteristics, and sensitivity.  His/Her choice will assure you of the greatest maximum comfort and permanency for your hair problem.

When choosing an electrologist, ask about credentials:  Are they licensed?  (Thirty-six states require licensure, but New York is not one of them.) What other industry-recognized certifications do they have?  How long have they been practicing?  Do they perform all modalities?  Do they follow Centers for Disease Control guidelines?  Can they provide references?

Electrolysis is the only form of permanent hair removal that can treat all colors and kinds of hair in all skin types without a problem.  If you choose electrolysis as a solution to your hair problem, it will change your life in a positive way.  You will likely enjoy greater confidence, an improved appearance, and self-satisfaction.
