Top 10
Tooth Trashers

Here are the top 10 items almost guaranteed to damage your teeth.  They are:

  1. Bottled Water:  drinking tooth beneficial local tap water is steadily being replaced by bottled water and water filtration systems that don’t fight cavities.  Drink tap, or look for bottles enhanced with fluoride.
  1. Starches, like pasta, pretzels and potato chips.  Saliva break these down into simple sugars.  For your teeth, a slice of bread isn’t much different than a piece of cake.
  1. Medicinal products, like antacids, cough drops and breath mints. Gram for gram, these items may contain the same amount of sugar as chocolate.
  1. Sports drinks. These can be worse than soda for teeth since they are high in enamel eroding acid and sugars.
  1. Coffee drinks. Your favorite grand double mocha latte extraordinaire can have as much sugar as a candy bar.
  1. Juice.  Surprisingly, an 8-ounce glass of orange juice and a same-size serving of some sodas offer approximately the same amount of sugar, 30 grams.
  1. Soda. High in processed sugars, and enamel-eroding acids. Diet sodas too! (acids)
  1. Hard candies. No surprise here.  Your teeth get bathed in sugar.
  1. Gum. Constant acid assualt. Opt for gums of the sugarless variety.
  1. Fruit-based products, like leathers and roll-ups. These snacks are not much different than candy.
